In 2025, we will continue our work with clients in theme parks, virtual and augmented reality and immersive art while developing our own games and experiences.

The Role

In this role, you'll bridge the gap between art and technology, developing high-quality and immersive experiences across AR/VR games, next generation theme park rides along with immersive location based entertainment. You'll work closely with artists, programmers, and designers to define and push the technical requirements for our visual fidelity while ensuring smooth performance across different platforms.

Job Description

Development of Visual Assets, Approaches and Art Pipeline:
  • Develop and maintain art pipelines and workflows that optimize production efficiency and quality.
  • Provide technical direction and help develop asset specifications and rendering budgets for performance/quality equilibrium of lighting, VFX and general scene rendering.
  • Provide technical expertise on effective approaches to scene lighting, such as using light probes, reflection probes, baked lighting.
  • Provide technical expertise around creating appropriate assets, VFX, shaders specifically for use in VR and AR experiences.
  • Ensure smooth integration of art assets, animations, sound, and other game elements into game engines such as Unity or Unreal, optimizing for performance and scalability.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration:
  • Work closely with designers, artists, and other departments to ensure technical solutions align with artistic vision and user experience goals.
  • Collaborate with graphics engineers to develop and debug shaders, rendering passes and post processing effects.
  • Collaborate with developers and artists to drive teamwork, support, and communication and to identify areas that require technical design, optimization or refactoring.
Performance Optimization:
  • Oversee performance profiling and optimization of games and immersive experiences to ensure smooth operation on various platforms (e.g., PC, console, mobile, VR/AR).
  • Identify and address bottlenecks in rendering, memory usage, and load times, ensuring optimal performance and user experience.
Project Estimation & Resource Management:
  • Provide accurate time estimates for tasks and deliverables, ensuring deadlines are met without sacrificing code quality or stability.
  • Manage and allocate resources within the development team, balancing workload and addressing skill gaps through mentoring, training, or hiring.
Technical Documentation & Knowledge Sharing:
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for systems, tools, workflows, and codebases to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies, development trends, and Unity/Unreal updates, sharing relevant knowledge and tools with the team.
  • Create tutorials, best-practice guides, and technical documentation for the team and other stakeholders.
Prototyping & Proof-of-Concept Development:
  • Lead the creation of prototypes and proof-of-concept applications for new features, mechanics, or immersive technologies.
  • Work with the design team to rapidly iterate on concepts and integrate new ideas into the game or experience.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge and experience in art pipelines, scripting/tools development, shaders, lighting, rendering, and VFX.
  • A foundational knowledge of 3D software such as Maya, Blender, 3DS, Zbrush and texture/material authoring tools such as Photoshop and Substance.
  • Strong technical skills in 3D graphics and real-time rendering, with experience in AR/VR development.
  • Proficient in Unity3D, and an understanding of Unreal Engine, and other AR/VR development tools.
  • Understanding of game asset creation and optimization for real-time engines.
  • Experience creating optimized shaders with HLSL, GLSL, and Unity for both Built-In and Scripting pipeline
  • Understanding of general game development concepts: 3D math, colliders, physics, character controllers, GUI, navmesh, particle systems, shaders, cameras, etc.
  • Be organized, self-motivated, with strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills
  • Be able to "wear many hats" if you have other skills, including: game design,art, graphic design, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external technical and executive clients.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git & Perforce).

Nice to Have Skills

  • Understanding of 3D modeling, texturing, rigging and animation.
  • Experience profiling performance and memory within game engines using debug rendering tools such as RenderDoc, PIX and Unity Profiler/Frame debugger.
  • Be able to self-manage, work in an agile environment, and track progress.
  • Be creative with an interest in design (everyone at Hololabs can contribute).
  • A passion for games, AR/VR, and emerging technologies.

Location
While we fully support remote employment, we can only consider applicants legally eligible to work in Canada (Citizen or Permanent Resident). Furthermore, candidates must be willing to visit the office in Victoria, BC for on-site meetings from time to time. The ability to occasionally work on-site is also an asset, especially when developing location-based AR products, where outings with the team may be beneficial.

Compensation

$100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
